Halibut & Salmon Fishing at Port Renfrew BC

Early season Halibut and Salmon fishing at Port Renfrew is off to a great start. With the weather on our side over the last 10 days…Port Renfrew was the place to be. The salmon fishing along the shore was consistant with Chinook salmon from 8 to 18lbs. Needle fish hoochies, and purple haze teaser heads with firecracker sized anchovies seemed to do the trick. We fished depths from 37 to 69ft following the needle fish on the sounder. 90% of the fish were marked ( hatchery), and their stomachs were packed with 4″ needle fish.
Halibut fishing was excellent! We anchored in the early spring spots, and found quality fish to wrestle off the bottom. If your heading off-shore, watch the weather and go prepared…better yet hire a quide and all you have to do is crank on the fish!

Port Renfrew Salmon and Halibut fishing…

Pacific Halibut recreational sport fishing season offically opened March 1st, and there has already been some excellent fishing at Port Renfrew to start the season. There are no changes in the possession limits from last season…one Halibut per/day/with two in possession. Size limits have changed for 2012 Halibut season…one Halibut of any size, your second Halibut can only be 83 cm.
April, May and June are excellent for halibut and early salmon fishing. The fishing is close to shore and you do not need to travel off-shore or long distances to experience fantastic early season fishing. Majority of the halibut are 25 to 75 lbs. Try using large herring, salmon bellies and mackerel. Octopus is an option if the dog fish are sniff’n around! Rubber grubs and gulps also work well off your spreader bars. Ling Cod open April 15th.
If you’re venturing out this time of year, listen to the weather and respect the off-shore conditions. Better yet hire a certified/professional guide who can make you adventure safe and successful.
As for the Port Renfrew Salmon…we are starting to see the first early runs of migratory chinook salmon filtering down southern Vancouver Island. Most of these U.S. fish are heading to the Columbia, Sacramento, and Pudget Sound river systems. To target these fiesty fish try using small 3.5″ Coyote spoons…Cop Car, Chartreuse glow & crome, Blue & crome, or Green & crome. Needle fish hoochies and firecracker sized anchovies with your favourite teaser heads and flashers are also a good bet for this time of the year.

I want to thank all my returning clients, friends and new quests that shared a phenomenal fishing season with me (Pacific Sport Fishing Charters) at Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island. With the start of a busy season in early June which extended into Nov…it has been a season for the record books. We started fishing at Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island for Halibut and Salmon which remained strong up and down the entire West Coast of Vancouver Island until Sept. Then our famous fall Coho season started, which provided some action packed days, before the fall Chum fishery normally kicks off in Oct/Nov. Our Chum fishery was forcasted to be poor for the 2011 season on Vancouver Island, with low escapements for Island rivers. As a result we have experienced record numbers of returning Chum salmon to Vancouver Island rivers, that even allowed the commercial fishing fleet to have a terminal fishery…the rivers were t0 capacity. With the results of the ocean temps/survival/nutrients and currents (La Nina) and our record Sockeye return last year 2010, it seems to be a cycle that science can not fully perdict or forcast mother nature. If you have never had the opportunity to sport fish for Chum Salmon, give it a try! If you like fighting Chinook Salmon and know their strength…try hooking up a Chum on light tackle. Even with their winter coats (purple color bars, and hooked noses) their meat is exceptional and they make great smokers for Christmas.

August fun with the Shirkey's...

The 2010 Salmon and Halibut season is ready for kick off at Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island. The word is out and everyone is jacked for another exciting fishing season. To start the pre-season off with a little excitement and good news… The Seattle Times released the US Fish and Wildlife forcast of 652,700 Columbia River Chinook to return for our 2010 fishing season. Combined with our strong numbers of Coho and forcasted Chinook to return to the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia watersheds, it is potentially the largest return of fish in the last 60 years. Remember 90% of these Columbia River fish are hatchery clipped,so they will be easy to identify. These fish will provide lots of early action in the Port Renfrew and Off-Shore waters of Swiftsure Bank, so re-spool your reels and sharpen your hooks for another fantastic season. Some effective tackle to target these fish, try using Tomic and Coyote spoons in 4″ to 6″. Green glow, Army Truck and the Cop Car are always effective. UV hoochies are also hard to beat and feeding fish have a hard time resisting the bait! With respect to flashers, try Hot Spots New UV glow…with the right combination, it’s guaranteed! What a great start to the 2009 season…testing the waters at Port Renfrew with family and friends. The weather was flat calm and sunny clear across to Swiftsure Bank and right up the entire West Coast. We already fired back 2 Springs in the high teens, and were waiting patiently for that lucky third hook up! Coop rigged the roll to work some magic! Bruce ran the boat down his favorite stretch of water. Carmen saw the bump on the rod, Coop set the hook and handed me the rod! “Fish On” (I must have been sitt’n in the right seat! ) After almost 30 minutes of tug of war, and few tense moments and lots of comments from the bleachers… Bruce netted the hog! High fives all around! Clean, bright and big and a really excited crew! We guessed her to be in the high 30’s. We were jacked to get back to the marina and hang it on the scale. “Wow” 45.5lbs…she held the record for the largest fish at Port Renfrew for almost 3 months! Thanks to my guide buddies Bill and Bruce for a perfect day.
